Button battery safety when a tracker is on the keys
Button battery safety is one of those subjects that gets a day in the calendar and then goes quiet for the other 364. National Button Battery Awareness Day fell on Friday 12 June 2026, run in Britain by the Child Accident Prevention Trust alongside RoSPA and the Office for Product Safety and Standards, and my honest view is that the message deserves more airtime than it gets, particularly now that half the small objects in a family home run on a coin cell, key finders included.
Why a coin cell is not a normal battery
The hazard is not choking. A swallowed coin cell usually goes down without any drama at all, which is exactly what makes it dangerous, there may be nothing to see.
As RoSPA puts it, saliva reacts with the battery straight away and the reaction produces caustic soda. That is not a slow chemical process. The campaign material for this year's awareness day states that a swallowed button battery can begin burning through a child's oesophagus in as little as two hours, and that larger lithium cells of 20 mm or more are the most dangerous because they are the ones wide enough to lodge in a small child's food pipe rather than pass through.
The consequences when it is missed are severe. The Health Services Safety Investigations Body has run a national investigation into undetected button and coin cell ingestion in children precisely because the early signs are so easy to read as something else. RoSPA's own case notes include a child who had a watch battery lodged in her oesophagus for four months before it was found.
What the symptoms actually look like
This is the part worth committing to memory, because it is the bit that fails in real households, not the storage, the recognition.
- Drooling, or refusing food and drink
- Pain in the throat or chest
- Coughing, gagging or noisy breathing
- Unexplained lethargy or loss of appetite
- Vomiting fresh, bright red blood, the emergency sign
RoSPA and CAPT are unambiguous about what to do. If you think a child has swallowed one, go straight to your nearest A&E or call 999. Do not wait to see whether symptoms develop, do not try to make the child sick, and take the packaging or the device with you if you can. For a child over one year old, the current advice is that honey may help slow the damage on the way; honey must never be given to a baby under one.
Where the batteries in your house actually are
Ask most parents to list the coin cells in their home and they will name the car fob and stop. The real inventory is longer: bathroom scales, kitchen timers, thermometers, LED tea lights, musical greetings cards, small remote controls, slim calculators, flameless candles, reading lights and, yes, Bluetooth trackers.
RoSPA's guidance is about containment rather than avoidance:
Spare batteries are locked away, and used batteries are disposed of correctly.
That second half is the one people skip. A flat cell still holds enough charge to cause a serious burn, so the drawer full of dead batteries waiting for a trip to the recycling point is not a safe drawer. Toy Safety Regulations require lockable battery compartments on toys, but a greetings card, a tea light and a novelty gadget are not toys in the regulatory sense, and their compartments often pop open with a fingernail.
The practical rules are dull and they work. Buy spares only when you need them. Keep new cells in their retail packaging, high up or locked. Put used ones straight into a sealed container and take them to a battery recycling bin, not a drawer. And check the compartment on anything a toddler can reach, if it opens without a tool, it belongs somewhere else.

Everything else about it stays useful in a family house. It joins the Find My app on Apple devices from iOS 14.5 onwards, rings at 80–100 dB out to roughly 60 metres, and leans on the Apple kit of people passing by beyond that. Left-behind alerts warn you as you walk off without the bag. Items can be shared with a partner on iOS 17 and later, so two adults can ring the same set of keys. It is IP67 rated and weighs about ten grams; Android is unsupported and Ultra Wideband is absent, so a chime and a map do the work.
